    Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

    Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

MLD is a very special type of skin massage designed to stimulate the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is part of our vascular system and an important part of the immune system. It comprises of a network of lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes that carry a clear fluid, called lymph, from our tissues back towards the heart.

A compromised lymphatic system can lead to a condition called lymphoedema. This is a condition of localised fluid retention and tissue swelling. Although there is no cure for lymphoedema it may be possible to control the main symptoms using MLD to minimise fluid build-up in the tissues and stimulate the flow of fluid through the lymphatic system back to the heart.

What are he benefits of MLD?

    • Is deeply relaxing
    • May strengthen the immune system as part of a “detox” programme
    • Relieves fluid congestion: swollen ankles, swollen legs, swollen arms
    • Is an effective component of the treatment and control of lymphoedema (which may occur after cancer treatment) and assists in conditions arising from venous insufficiency
    • Can be used to speed healing after cosmetic surgery
