    Essential oils - the natural way to help with bites and stings.

    Chamomile, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Lemongrass, Peppermint and Tea Tree, diluted in appropriate carrier oils can be applied directly to the bite or sting to help give relief

    Chamomile Essential Oil has the following properties: analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and bactericidal. These therapeutic actions may relieve physical pain, stopping the itching, burning and swelling caused by a bug/insect bite. It is known to be soothing and reduces emotional stress.

    Eucalyptus Essential Oils are considered to have the following properties: analgesic, antiseptic, antiviral, bactericidal and some varieties (e.g. lemon scented) are insect repellent. Easing the discomfort of bug/insect bites and protecting the body against infection. The lemon scented variety is a good insect repellent.

    Lavender Essential Oil has the following properties: analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antiviral, fungicidal and cooling. When used on bites and burns it helps to relieve the pain they cause and works to prevent infection. The oil promotes cell growth and rapid healing, it is also known to be a soothing and calming oil.

    Lemongrass Essential Oil has both anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, healing bug bites and reducing the risk of infection. It has insect repellent properties.

    Peppermint Oil versatile and has the following properties: analgesic, antiseptic, antiviral, cooling and vasoconstrictive. Used on the skin it reduces swelling relieves pain, itching and burning sensations, helps to prevent infection and has a cooling effect on the skin. The smell of peppermint oil may deter other bugs from coming near you.

    Tea Tree Oil has potent antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic properties, it is also an anti-inflammatory agent. It has been used to treat many skin complaints and acts as a great remedy for bug bites or stings. It is thought that tea tree oil contains a natural antihistamine, this works to reduce the body’s allergic reactions and itching sensations. People have reported that tea tree oil used on bites, reduces swelling and the itching while the oil’s antibacterial properties help to prevent bacterial growth and reduce the risk of infection.

    Directions for use, dilute essential oils into a carrier oil (Almond, Coconut, Grapeseed Jojoba and Olive oils) at the ratio of 6 drops of essential oil with one teaspoon of carrier oil, before applying to the bite or sting. Lavender can be used undiluted on the bite, burn or sting but if you have sensitive skin then dilute as above.

    You can use a combination of the oils above, dilute first then mix together. Apply directly to the bite or sting every two hours.
