Herbal Medicine: What to expect during the consultation with a medical herbalist?
During the first consultation, the nature, onset, and progression of your complaint will be carefully considered. Juliana will also take a detailed history of your past conditions, and medications, as well as your family medical history. Taking a detailed history of your health will help to build a picture of you and your overall condition with an emphasis on assessing the underlying causes of your current complaints. This will allow Juliana to tailor the best herbal treatment for you.
To assist with the diagnosis, Juliana may ask if you would mind a physical examination which could include taking your blood pressure, listening to your lungs and torso with a stethoscope, and examining more closely your skin, tongue, eyes, hands and nails. She may also refer you for further tests with your GP or privately, and please bring with you any test and investigation results you have already done. Juliana will ask questions about your nutrition and lifestyle as part of your consultation. If your diet needs attention, she will support you in adapting your eating habits so that your body and mind are getting nourished and able to sustain your immune function and energy requirements.
Herbalism is for everyone and can help with chronic and acute conditions. Herbal treatment can be taken on its own or complementary to other therapies. Any drug interactions and contraindications between herbs and medication you might already take are carefully considered by consulting pharmacology databases and the latest research.
Conditions:
The approach of modern medical herbalism.
More than ever, there is a need to provide safe, effective and practical healthcare solutions. What sets apart modern medicinal herbalism from other therapies is the holistic, patient-centred approach and treatment strategies that tackle the complexity of modern diseases, such as chronic and autoimmune types.
A properly trained medical herbalist can therapeutically prescribe medicinal herbs following traditional herbal wisdom and the latest scientific understandings of the therapeutic qualities of herbs, anatomy, physiology and pathologies.
Juliana will assess what was discussed during the consultation and will create a health management plan tailored to your needs. The plan will usually consist of dietary, lifestyle, exercise recommendations and a bespoke herbal prescription. The herbal medicine prescription will usually consist of a mix of liquid extracts (tincture), capsules, high quality dried herbs for tea given at therapeutic doses, creams for skin conditions or arthritic pains, etc.
