Experience
I have been studying mental health and psychology for 5 years now, with two years of this focusing on children and young people counselling and mental health. Throughout my training I have developed a wide range of counselling skills and completed 100 hours of placement within primary and secondary school aged clients. I also completed a dissertation researching the experiences of LGBTQIA+ young people in therapy.
During my studying, I have developed a vast amount of knowledge of the struggles young people are facing and how to support them to reach a place of healing, whilst continuously practicing skills and gaining feedback throughout my training, allowing me to develop my practice to the most effective it can be.
Since completing my qualification, I have been working within two agencies which focus on children and young people mental health as a counsellor, visiting schools and providing integrated counselling services. I have experience working with ages 6-16 and am qualified to work with ages across all of this population. During my time working with these agencies, I have gained so much more experience in a range of presenting problems with children and young people, including complex trauma, depression, and bereavement. I have a wide range of experience in working with school and family related issues.
I also have regular supervision with a professional counsellor, who supports me in my practice, developing self-awareness and guiding me to the most effective support for my clients.
What to expect
I work in an integrative way, meaning I draw on different approaches of counselling to meet the needs of the client. I value long-term work, where the therapeutic relationship can be built and healing processes build on these foundations, going at the pace of the client to overcome their struggles.
I use play and creative methods, CBT techniques and draw on person centred skills throughout, including empathy.
I largely work in a way where I am led by the client. We all have an innate capacity to heal, and with the right conditions we can reach this, through the support of a safe space provided by myself as a counsellor.
I also am highly trained in safeguarding, where as part of my role working with children is to ensure they are safe.
I also value working with parents/carers (children) as much as needed, with confidentiality in mind, as I have learnt through my training how the systems can be supported to support the child to work on their healing outside of counselling.
Beginning work with me as your, or your child’s counsellor, you can guarantee that you are choosing a counsellor who understands how challenging and overwhelming life can be at times, and from this will enter every session with warmth and empathy for the client, seeing the world through their eyes.
